“Kyle Hardy Wins Limited Late Model Feature”
“Glenn Elliott Wins UMP Modified Feature”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-Last week's weather halted the initial start of the 2024 racing season, however,
this past weekend the sun shined and the temperatures were nice. This combination would
allow the new season to kick off with three classes headlining the opening day action! We would
see the limited late models, ump modifieds and pure stocks all take timed hotlaps to set their
starting lineups for their respective heat races.
Once all of the qualifying races were finished it would be time for our invocation and playing of
our National Anthem. Now it was time for the first features of the 2024 racing season!
First onto the speedway would be the limited late models. Kyle Hardy and Austin Stover would
make up the front row. Hardy would get a great start and lead the field out of turn one. Derick
Quade would quickly move past Stover and take over second as the field completed lap one.
The first caution of the race would come out on lap two as Chase Hardy would take a hard hit
into the turn three wall. It would take three more tries to get the feature started again as wrecks
would plague the restarts causing them to be halted and tried again. Once the field resumed
racing, Hardy would quickly start to pull away from Quade who was also starting to pull away
from third place running Stover. The final caution of the 25 lap event would come out on lap
eight as Bubby Tharp Jr would slow to a stop at the top of turn 2. For the remainder of the event
there would be no change in the top three cars. Hardy would slowly pull away each lap. Lap
traffic at the end of the event would stall Hardy slightly allowing Quade to begin to slowly close
in. However, Quade wouldn’t get close enough to challenge for the lead before the checkered
flag would fly. Kyle Hardy would take the win, followed by Derick Quade and Austin Stover.
Next up we would see the UMP modifieds take center stage. Glenn Elliott and Mitch Thomas
would line up side by side on the front row. Contact would cause Thomas to go for a spin in turn
one on the initial start of the event. After a complete restart Glenn Elliot would take the lead
followed by Austin Self and TJ DeHaven. DeHaven would move around Self for the second
position on lap two. Elliott would build up a six car lead by lap four over DeHaven. Donnie
Farling would move around Self also on this lap, earning him the third position. The caution flag
would fly on lap eight as George Beckett spun in turn one. On the restart Farling would quickly
get around DeHaven for the second position. The field would once again slow as Roy Clower
went for a spin in turn four. After the restart Elliott would continue to lead over Farling, as Mitch
Thomas was making a charge from the back to take over the third position. Thomas would
eventually make his way into the second position as cautions began to plague the rest of the
event. As the feature was coming to an end, Elliott would hold a six car lead over Thomas by
the end of lap 22. Glenn Elliiott would go on to win the 25 lap event. Mitch Thomas and Mike
Grady Jr would round out the top 3.
The final feature of the night would be for the pure stock division. Dylan Rutherford and Chuckie
Johnson would lead the field to the green. Rutherford would hold off challenges from both
Chuckie Johnson and Tony Johnson during the fifteen lap event. Both Johnsons would swap the
second place running position several times during the event. Dylan Rutherford would take the
win, followed by Chuckie Johnson and Tony Johnson.
We want to thank everyone who attended this week's events and look forward to seeing you this
coming weekend for the first points races of the season.
