“Jonathan DeHaven Wins Limited Late Model Feature”
“Jorjie Sweger Wins Legend Feature”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-The temperatures have been hot in the Valley lately and so has the racing
action. We would see the limited late model, UMP modifieds, legend, pure stock, and hobby
stock divisions compete this evening. Once all of the qualifying races for each division were
completed, our dirtologist Bobby Dove and his crew would perform some track prep work to the
top side of the speedway. Next we would move to our Invocation and playing of our National
Anthem.
It was now time for the main events. The limited late models would be the first division onto the
speedway. Polesitter Jonathan DeHaven would lead lap one over Gerald Davis and Austin
Stover. By lap six DeHaven would have a half of a straightaway lead over Davis. Michael Carter
would slow to a stop at the bottom of the front straightaway, bringing out the caution on lap nine.
DeHaven would continue to lead over Davis and Stover after the restart. Mike Franklin would
begin to challenge Stover for the third position on lap twelve. Stover would pull ahead an
resecure the third position by lap fourteen. Jonathan DeHaven would go on to win the twenty lap
event. Gerald Davis and Austin Stover would round out the top three.
Next, we would see the UMP modified division. Front row starters Scott Heath and Michael
Altobelli would race side by side into turn one, down the back straight away, and into turn three.
Altobelli would use the outside momentum to his advantage and power ahead to lead lap one.
Altobelli would then begin to pull away from Heath who was pulling slowly away from TJ
DeHaven, who was currently in the third position. By lap twelve Altobelli would have more than
a full straight away lead over the field. This would be erased on lap sixteen as Travis Clower
would spin in turn three. This couldn’t stall Altobelli’s speed as he would go on to win the feature
event. Scott Heath and TJ DeHaven would round out the top three.
The legend cars would pull onto the speedway next. Steve Seibert Jr and Jorjie Sweger would
make up the front row. The young lady, Jorjie Sweger, would get a great start and lead the field
to lap one, followed by Seibert and Jeremy Hahn. The field would quickly slow on lap three, as
two cars would get together in turn four and bring out the caution. There would be no change in
the top three as the field went back green. Sweger would lead the field lap after lap, as Seibert
would try various lines, looking for a way to the lead. Sweger would stay smooth and consistent
each lap, earning her a four car lead over the field by the end of the race. Jorjie Sweger would
take the win in the fifteen lap feature event. Steve Seibert Jr and Jeremy Hahn would round out
the top three.
Next up would be the street stock division. Track officials would notice the window net down on
Gary Fry’s machine just before the field would go green. We would halt the initial start to help
get that window net put up for safety. On the next attempt to go green Fry would spin in turn four
and bring out the caution. The third try would be a good one and we would see Walter Crouch
lead lap one over Chuckie Johnson and Buddy Wilson. We would now see Crouch begin to pull
out to around a five car lead by lap seven. Johnson would begin to try and find the momentum
to chase the leader back down, as he also had a five car lead over Wilson in third. As the laps
began to come to an end, Johnson would start to reel in Crouch slightly. Cutting his lead from
five cars to three. Walter Crouch would go on to take the win, followed by Chuckie Johnson and
Buddy Wilson.
The final feature of the night would be for the hobby stock division. Jason Wilkins would lead lap
one as Chris Sumption and BIlly Sonner Jr battled side by side for second and third. The
caution flag would fly on lap four, as fluid would be dropped on the back straight away. Wilkins
would lead the field to the restart over Sonner and Sumption. Wilkins would slowly start to pull
away from the field, until he would slow coming out of turn four and bring out the caution on lap
nine. At the same time David Barb’s machine would drop fluid from the start of turn three all the
way to the exit of turn four. On the next restart we would see Sonner lead as Justin Hottle would
now move into the second position. Sumption would battle Hottle for the second position on lap
eleven. By lap twelve Sonner would pull out to an eight car lead over Hottle who had now pulled
ahead of Sumption. The final caution of the night would come out on lap thirteen, as Robert
Wilson would spin in turn two. Billy Sonner Jr would win the feature event. Justin Hottle and
Chris Sumption would round out the top three.
We want to thank everyone for coming out in the hot temperatures and supporting the night's
events. Make sure to tell your friends, neighbors, and everyone else who have children to come
out this Saturday Night. It will be kids night at the races! We will have some fun events planned
for our young race fans!
