“Trever Feathers leads flag to flag in the Frank Sagi Qualifier”
“Buddy Wilson picks up another Pure Stock Victory” By Brent Hottle Winchester (VA)- Clear skies and warm weather make for a beautiful day at the races. That's exactly what mother nature gave us this Saturday evening. This year we have been proud of the partnerships we have been able to form with other tracks. This weekend showed that once again as Alan Sagi partnered with the speedway to host the Frank Sagi Tribute Qualifier. This would allow the super late model feature winner to be automatically qualified for the Frank Sagi Tribute at the Hagerstown Speedway. Once timed hotlaps were over for the super late model, crate late model, and mid atlantic modifieds, along with regular hotlaps for the pure stocks, it would be time for the heat races. During the heat races we would quickly see the drivers were going to have to conquer a “slick” track surface. We would see several drivers slide up in the turns during these heat races from driving hard while attempting to make passes. Promoter Greg Gunter would add some water to the speedway once the heat races were completed. Next we would receive an invocation and honor America with the playing of the National Anthem. It was now time for our feature events. The first feature event of the night would be for the crate late models. Front row starters Levi Crowl and Brayden Anderson would charge side by side into turn one. Crowl would carry a little more momentum as he would slide ahead of Anderson to take the lead out of turn one. This would also allow third place starter Justin Weaver to move past Anderson for the second position. Crowl would lead lap one, followed by Weaver and Daniel Brown Jr. The yellow flag would fly several times during the event. This would allow position changes throughout the field. However nothing could keep Crowl from picking up the victory and leading every lap. Mike Franklin and Daniel Brown Jr would trade places for second and third place during several of the restarts. Brown would eventually come out on top as he would cross the finish line in second, with Justin Weaver making a late race pass and finishing third. Next up were the Mid Atlantic Modifieds. We would see Michael Altobelli continue to show his strength in this division as he would take the early lead and never look back. Keith Jackson would quickly jump into second around outside pole sitter Ty Rhoades. The two would battle for the second position with Rhoades taking it back from Jackson on the seventh lap. Rhoades would spin in turn four following a restart from a previous caution giving the second position back to Jackson. Altobelli would show he had the car to beat as Jackson was unable to find the extra speed needed to chase down the leader. Michael Altobelli would take the win, followed by Keith Jackson and Rick Hulson. It was now time for the super late models to take to the speedway. Trever Feathers would jump ahead of the pack and lead the field into turn one. Feathers would quickly begin to pull away from the field as he would build up to a half of a straightaway lead by lap six. It would quickly go away as the caution flag would fly for pole sitter Dj Myers, as he slowed to a stop on the inside of turn one. The caution flag would quickly fly again during the restart as Jonathan DeHaven would slow to a stop at the top of turn two. Once the field went back to green they would race caution free to the finish. Feathers would quickly begin to pull away once again. Scott Palmer would follow him in second but would be unable to keep up with the leader. With just five laps to go, we would see Drake Troutman move around Palmer for the second position. Feathers had built up to a full straightaway lead by this point. However, as Feathers began to navigate lap traffic, we would see Troutman begin to close slightly. Feathers would take the win with a three quarter of a straightaway lead. Followed by Drake Troutman and Scott Palmer. Feathers would now be automatically qualified for the Frank Sagi Tribute. We look forward to seeing who will win the Frank Sagi Tribute, as that will automatically qualify them for the Jimmy Spence Memorial that will be held here at the Winchester Speedway later this year. The pure stock division was next to take to the speedway. Front row starters Buddy Wilson and Michael Carter would charge side by side into turn one. They would continue to race side by side all the way around the speedway with Wilson leading lap one by just a nose. Wilson would begin to pull away from the field. The caution flag would fly for Andy Adkins, as he would spin in turn three on the tenth lap of the event. Once the race went back to green, Wilson would continue to hold his lead and begin to pull away. Buddy Wilson would go on to win the fifteen lap event followed by Michale Carter and Jasen Geesaman. The final event of the night was an exhibition race for the vintage class. Bill Coada would take the early lead. However, he would be chased by Chris Boher and Walter Crouch. Boher and Crouch would race side by side right on the rear of Coada for several laps. You could almost cover all three cars with a blanket during most of the race. Bill Coada would go on to win the event followed by Walter Crouch and Chris Bohrer. It was another great night at the races. We want to thank all of our great fans who came out to watch along with all of the teams that came to compete for the win in their divisions. We appreciate all of your support and we look forward to seeing you back at the races next week.
