“Derick Quade Wins Steel Block Clash Feature”
“Chuckie Johnson Wins Pure Stock Feature”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-It has been a very dry summer, however, “Hurricane Debbie” brought torrential
rain to the area this week. Greg Gunter, Bobby Dove, and the rest of the hard working track
prep crew went to work making sure the speedway would withstand the winds and rain, and be
ready to race on Saturday. We would see the Steel Block Clash Series come to town this
evening. The crate late model, pure stock, and hobby stock divisions would also be on hand.
Once hot laps were completed. We would see traditional time trials for the limited late models.
Derrick Quade would set fast time over all.
Next we would see the heat race action for all divisions, plus one b-main event for the limited
late models. Once all of the qualifying races were completed, we would pause for our weekly
invocation and playing of our National Anthem.
The pure stock division would be the first to do battle. On the initial start we would see several
cars get together in turn one causing Brandon Lowery to hit the outside wall in turn two. This
would cause a complete restart. On the next restart Buddy Wilson would get a great start from
his outside pole starting position to lead lap one over Chuckie Johnson and Walter Crouch. The
field would slow on lap three for a spinning car in turn two. On the restart Wilson would continue
to lead, however Crouch would move into second ahead of Johnson. The field would slow again
for various cautions during laps four through nine. This time on the lap nine restart we would
see Wilson continue to lead, as Johnson had now regained the second position over Crouch.
Johnson would now chase Wilson lap after lap around the speedway. Johnson would race
various grooves as he tried to find a way around the leader. The action would heat up during the
final two laps of the event. Wilson would slide slightly up the track and almost stop as he tried to
hold the inside groove. This would allow Johnson enough room to pull alongside Wilson as the
pair raced side by side down the back straight away. As the pair entered turn three on the final
lap, Johnson would start to get loose and slightly touch Wilson’s machine. This would send
Johnson up the banking. Johnson would hold on and charge out of turn four as Wilson was
charging hard on the bottom. Chuckie Johnson would cross the line first and win an exciting
race. Buddy Wilson and Walter Crouch would round out the top three.
Next to pull out onto the speedway would be the Steel Block Clash series. Kyle Lear would lead
the field into turn one. Pole sitter Kenny Moreland would slide high in turn one and slide out of
the top three. Lear would lead lap one over Derick Quade and Austin Stover. Lear would now go
on to pull out to a half of a straight away lead over the field by lap four. This lead would be taken
away on lap seven as the caution flag would fly for Wesley Bonebrake, who had come to a stop
at the top of turn four. On the restart Lear would slide way high in turn one. This would allow
Quade and Stover to race by, moving him to third. Quade would now begin to pace the field as
he would quickly pull out to a half of a straight away lead over Stover, who had also pulled
ahead of Lear by the same margin. Moreland would regroup and find himself back in the top
three on lap twelve by taking the position away from Lear. Moreland would now begin to run
Stover down and pull up to his rear bumper by lap fifteen, just as Quade began to navigate lap
traffic on lap sixteen. The field would slow for the final time on lap seventeen due to debris in
turn two. Moreland would use the restart to his advantage and move ahead of Stover for the
second position. Quade would quickly pull out to a three car lead over Moreland. Moreland
would now begin to chase Quade lap after lap, as he tried to find the extra momentum needed
to pull up the back of him and make a pass. Lap traffic on lap twenty-six couldn’t prevent Quade
from finding victory lane, as he would go on to win the thirty lap event. Kenny Moreland and
Austin Stover would round out the top three.
It would now be the Rush crate late model’s turn to compete. Frontrow starters Travis Campbell
and Davin Kaiser would race side by side through lap one. Campbell would pull ahead of Kaiser
by lap two and begin to build a lead. Isaiah Gochenour would now battle Kaiser for the second
position and take it away on lap three. The field would slow once on lap five as Trae Armel
would spin in turn four bringing out the caution. Campbell would hold his lead on the restart, as
Kaiser would move around Gochenour and back into the second position. Campbell would now
start to pull away from the field each lap. He would build a full straight away lead by lap fifteen.
Campbell would navigate lap traffic on lap eighteen. Travis Cambell would take the win, Davin
Kaiser and Isaiah Gochenour would round out the top three.
The last feature of the night would be for the hobby stock division. We would see this event go
caution free. Front row starters Jason Wilkins and Chris Sumption would battle side by side to
complete lap one. As Kristopher Hutton and Justin Hottle battled side by side behind them for
the third and fourth positions. Wilkins would lead lap two over Sumption and Hutton. Wilkins
would now slowly pull ahead by a half of a straight away over the field on lap ten. Jason Wilkins
would go on to win the fifteen lap event. Chris Sumption and Kristopher Hutton would round out
the top three.
We want to thank everyone who attended this event. A night at the races always beats a night
stuck at home. We look forward to seeing everyone back this Saturday night as the super late
models make their appearance for the Lee Stultz Memorial.
