“Tanner Jones Wins The Central PA Legend Series Feature”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-Perseverance was the motto for this Saturday evening. With clear skies and
warm temperatures in the area, it looked to be a great day at the races. However, as warmups
were underway, our scoring tower would notice an issue with our scoring loop. They would
quickly go to work trying to diagnose the problem. We are currently having the PA system
upgraded, this is part of an overhaul of several systems at the speedway. The staff was unable
to fix the scoring loop issue during the night, but have found the issue and have the necessary
parts to fix it this week. Remember that word perseverance? Once the staff reset the order of
events and lined up all of the division heat races via pill draw, we would see the heat races start.
However, before the end of the heat race action could be completed, the sun would start to set.
As the track lights were coming on, several would go out. Then more would turn off until
eventually they were all out. Thanks to Greg and his hard working staff, this couldn’t stop the
night. After a delay in action, they were able to get all but one set of lights turned on. This would
allow the speedway to be lit up and ready for racing to resume.
Once we briefly paused for our weekly Invocation and playing of our National Anthem, it would
be time for the feature events.
The first division to pull out onto the speedway would be the Central PA Legend Series cars.
Shaun Abney and Logan Carbaugh would make up the front row. Carbaugh would lead the field
into turn one at the drop of the green flag. Fourth row starting Tanner Jones would quickly
challenge and take the lead out of turn four to lead lap one. By lap three Jones had pulled out to
a nice lead over Carbaugh and Abney. This would be erased on lap five as Rick Hartwig would
spin in turn three. Jones would continue to lead after the restart as the field would once again
slow on lap eight. Chase Singleterry would spin in turn three causing Vincent Wenrich to spin to
miss him. During the same incident, we would see Lincoln Kearcher spin in turn four collecting
Ben Goldsmith in the process. During the next restart attempt, we would see five cars spin in
turn two. Jones would once again lead at the restart, only this time he would be followed by
Abney and Colton Friese. Wayne Dutterer Jr would spin in turn one bringing out the caution
once again. Jones would lead the field to the green as Friese took over the second position from
Abney. Jones would begin to pull away from Friese and build up to around an half of a
straightaway lead at one point. However, the caution flag would once again fly on lap sixteen
erasing that lead. Friese would charge hard into the first turn on the restart causing him to spin
while running second. Seth Kearchner and Wes Alleman would also spin in turn one as they
avoided the spinning Friese. Jones would continue to lead and take the win after a two lap
shootout would arise, due to a lap eighteen caution. Shaun Abney and Logan Cabaugh would
round out the top three.
Next we would see the hobby stock division pull onto the speedway. Jason Wilkins would take
the early lead over Randy Linaburg and Cody Sumption. The field would slow on lap two as
Justin Hottle would spin in turn two. Sam Hoffman would also spin to avoid Hottle. On the restart
Wilkins would keep the lead, as Cody Sumption began to challenge Linaburg for the second
position. The field would once again slow on lap four for the final caution of the event, as Sam
Hoffman would spin in turn two. As the field went back to green, we would see Wilkins lead with
Cody Sumption once again challenging Linaburg for the second position. Sumption would take
over the second position on lap six and pull up to the rear bumper of Wilkins. The pair would
begin to pull away from Chris Sumption who had taken over the third position on lap nine. As
the leaders raced nose to tail lap after lap, it looked as if Wilkins would continue his winning
streak. However, in racing nothing is a guarantee, we would see Wilkins' car slow as he raced
out of turn four on the final lap. Cody Sumption would quickly pass Wilkins and take the win.
Chris Sumption and Jason Wilkins would round out the top three.
The limited late models would be next onto the speedway. Mike Franklin would take the early
lead from his outside pole position. Davin Kaiser and Austin Stover rounded out the top three.
Stover would challenge Kaiser for the second position on lap two and take it away on lap four.
By this time Franklin has pulled out to around an half of a straight away lead. Contact between
Craig Parrill and Jonathan DeHaven would send DeHaven spinning on the front straight away,
as the field completed lap five. Franklin would go on to win the twenty lap event by a full straight
away over Austin Stover. Davin Kaiser would go on to finish third.
The final feature of the night would be for the pure stock division. Front row starters Buddy
Wilson and Michael Carter would race side by side from the drop of the green. Wilson would pull
slightly ahead of Carter to lead lap one. Wilson would then begin to pull away from the rest of
the field each lap. Wilson would go on to win the caution free feature event. Michael Carter and
Walter Crouch would round out the top three.
We want to thank everyone who attended this weekend's racing events. We also want to thank
everyone for their patience during the delay. Remember I said the word for the night was
“Perseverance”! The scoring tower had to persevere through the scoring issue. Greg and his
staff persevered through the lighting issue. Jones persevered through eight cautions to win the
legends feature. Cody Sumption persevered through several tough weeks and a race that
looked as if he wouldn’t find victory lane again only to be in the right spot to capitalize on Wilkins
heartbreak to take the hobby stock victory. It was a crazy night at “The Action Track” and the
season isn’t over yet! We look forward to seeing everyone back next Saturday night for our final
points races of the season. Congratulations to TJ DeHaven for winning the UMP Modified
division championship. And also congratulations to Preston Alleman for winning the Winchester
US Legend Championship!
