“Trever Feathers Dominates Curt Hershey Memorial” “Trent Holmes Wins HIs First Pure Stock Feature”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-It was a cool Saturday afternoon in the Shenandoah Valley. We would see the super
late models make their final stop at the speedway this season to honor the late engine builder
Curtis Hershey. We would also see the crate late model, pure stock, and SCDRA divisions race this
evening. Timed Hot laps for all four divisions would set the heat race lineups. We would then move
to our qualifying heat races to set the starting lineups for each division.
We would briefly pause for a moment to hold our weekly invocation and playing of the National
Anthem. It would now be time for some feature racing action.
The pure stock division would be the first to pull onto the speedway. We would see Brandon Lowery
get sideways in turn one on the initial start that would cause Dylan Rutherford and Delmar Grady to
make contact in the center of turns one and two that would bring out the caution. We would have a
complete restart. After the restart pole sitter Trent Holmes would lead lap one over Jerry Jenkins
Jr and Chuckie Johnson. Holmes would begin to pull away from the field as the laps wound down.
Johnson would spend several laps trying to find the momentum needed to pass Jenkins for the second
position. Johnson would make the pass and move into the second position on lap twelve. Holmes would
have built up a half of a straight away lead by this time. Johnson would begin to pull away from
Jenkins as he attempted to chase the leader down. Trent Holmes would lead all fifteen laps to take
his first win in the division. Chuckie Johnson and Jerry Jenkins Jr would round out the top three.
Chuckie Johnson would also become the 2024 pure stock track champion.
Next it would be time for the running of the Curt Hershey Memorial for the super late model
division. Outside pole sitter Trever Feathers would get the holeshot out of turn four and lead the
field into turn one. Feathers would lead lap one as Dillan Stake and Kenny Moreland crossed the
stripe side by side for the second position. The caution would quickly come out as Dalton Dillman
would spin in turn four. It would take three more tries to get the race going again, as we would
first see a multi car spin in turn one and debris on the back straight away bring out the caution
two more times. Once the field went back to green flag racing, Feathers would lead lap two over
Stake and Moreland. Feathers would then begin to quickly pull away from the field and build up a
full straightaway lead by lap seven. Franklin Caricofe would spin in turn two and bring out the
caution on lap thirteen. Stake would slide high on the restart allowing Moreland and James
Lichliter to move into the second and third positions. Ron Fink would spin in turn four and bring
out the caution on lap sixteen. Feathers would continue to show his dominance after the restart,
while Lichliter moved around Moreland for the second position. Feathers would go on to win the
forty lap event with over a half of a track lead. Feathers would put over half of the field a lap
down. This was a display of how dominant the late Scott Bloomquist Team Zero Race Cars
can be as Trever would go on to say he won in a 2016 model year chassis!
Next the crate late models would pull out onto the speedway surface. Tyler Hoy would lead lap one,
as Gregory Carrico and Kyle Hardy battled side by side for the second position. Hardy would
complete the pass and set his sights on Hoy for the lead on lap two. Dylan HIgh would spin in turn
four and bring out the caution. We would see a four car pile up in turn two after the restart to
slow the field once again. Hardy would use the high side to take the lead away from Hoy on lap
three. Hardy would quickly pull out to a three car lead over Hoy on lap four just before slowing
again as four cars would wreck at the entrance of turn one bringing out the caution once again. We
would race one more lap before slowing again for fluid on the speedway. Hardy would lead lap six as
Hoy began to battle Jacob Whitt for the second position. Whitt would slide high and allow Hoy and
Jeremiah Marshall to move into the second and third positions. We would slow once again for debris
on the back straight away. Hardy would continue to show his strength on the restart as he would
once again begin to pull away from Hoy, Marshall, and the rest of the field. Travis Campbell would
spin and bring the caution back out on lap fifteen. There would be no change in the top three after
the restart. Dylan High would get crossed up on the front straight away on lap nineteen and ride
along the wall until coming to a stop at the entrance to turn one and bring out the caution. This
would make a one lap shootout, however, that couldn’t stop Kyle Hardy from taking the win. Tyler
Hoy and Jeremiah Marshall would round out the top three. Davin Kaiser wouldn’t finish the feature,
however he would become the 2024 crate late model track champion.
We would end the night with the SCDRA division. At the start of the race pole sitter Shawn Payne
would charge hard into turn one. He would slide up the track taking Rob Rudisill Jr with him. This
would allow Allen Griffith and Matt Worley to slide under the front row starters and challenge for
the lead. Contact in turn three would send Griffith hard into the outside wall. On the restart we
would see Rudisill lead lap one over Payne and Robbie Carroll. The trio would race nose to tail
around the speedway for several laps. Brian Skelly would stop on the back straight away and bring
out the caution on lap five. There would be no change in top three after the restart. Carroll would
battle Payne for the second position and take it over on lap nine. Rob Rudisill Jr would go on to
win the fifteen lap event. Robbie Carroll and Lonnie Hobday would round out the top three. Shawn
Payne would win the 2024 SCDRA track championship.
We want to thank everyone for attending this week's events. The season might be coming to an end,
however, we still have some big races ahead. We will see the Ernie D’s event for the UMP modified
division this coming weekend.
