“Mason Zeigler Wins The Ernie D’s UMP Modified Feature”
“Mountaineer Man” Gerald Davis Wins Limited Late Model Feature”
By Brent Hottle
As the racing season begins to wind down, it would be time for the UMP Modified Nationals at
“The Action Track”. The limited late model and legend divisions would also be on hand for this
evening of racing. Once hot laps were completed for the divisions we would see traditional style
time trials for the UMP modified division. The top six qualifiers would automatically be locked
into the feature and would also compete in a Climb to the Pole Dash later in the program.
With the completion of the heat race action we would see the dash for the UMP modifieds.
Mason Zeigler would out duel Chris Arnold to earn the pole starting position for the forty lap
main event. We would next take a pause during the racing action to hold our weekly invocation
and playing of our National Anthem.
Next, it would be time for the limited late model feature event. Gerald Davis would get a great
start from the outside pole position and lead lap one over Michael Carter and James Lichliter.
Davis would quickly begin to pull away from the field each lap. By lap nine Davis would have a
three quarter of a straight away lead over Carter and Lichliter, who were simultaneously batling
side by side for the second position. Lichliter would move ahead of Carter by the completion of
lap ten and set his sights on the leader. As Davis continued to lead the way, Lichliter would
begin close in on Davis and pull away from Carter. Lichliter would pull up to the back of Davis
just as the pair found themselves in lap traffic on lap twenty. Lichliter would now begin to search
for the momentum needed to pull alongside Davis and challenge for the lead. Just as the pair
completed the twenty-second lap, Lichliter would charge hard into the corner and have to get
hard on the brakes to keep from getting into the rear of Davis' machine. This would cause him to
stall his momentum and let Davis pull away. Gerald Davis would go on to win the twenty-five lap
caution free event. James Lichliter and Michael Carter would round out the top three.
It would now be time for the UMP Modifieds to pull out onto the speedway. Before the start of
the $7,025 to win main event we would line the cars up on the front straightaway for driver
introductions. Once the introductions were complete and the drivers were strapping in, we would
share a list of “Legends of Memory Lane” where several fans and family members would donate
money to a certain finishing position in honor of a loved one. You can find this list in the results
section at the bottom of this article. At the start of the event Vance Williams Jr, Benjamin Seals
and Frank Dibella would go for a spin resulting in a restart. Mason Zeigler would lead lap one
over Cody Williams and Chris Arnold, who were side by side across the stripe. Zeigler would
quickly pull out to about a half of a straightaway lead over Williams who had pulled ahead of
Arnold. With a full straightaway lead, Ziegler would find himself in heavy lap traffic by lap eight.
Gary Warehime would slow on the back straightaway and bring out the caution on lap nine.
Arnold would use the restart to his advantage and move ahead of Willaims, who was now
holding off a challenge from Ty Rhoades for third. Debris in turn one would bring out the caution
once again on lap eleven. Rhoades would use the next restart to his advantage and move into
the second position, just before Benjamin Seals and Roy Clower would spin in turn two and
bring out the caution on lap thirteen. There would be no change in the top three Zeigler,
Rhoades, and Arnold as the trio raced around the speedway and restarted from three cautions
during the next several laps. During a restart on lap twenty-four Arnold would move back into
second as Glenn Elliott had now moved into the third position. Zeigler would continue to pace
the field as he had the entire event, once again building up a half of a straightaway lead over
Arnold. Zeigler would once again find himself in lap traffic on the thirty-sixth lap, just before
Elliott would hit the outside wall at the exit of turn four and bring out the final caution of the
event. Mason Zeigler would go on to lead all forty laps and take the feature win. Chirs Arnold
and Michael Alotbelli would round out the top three.
The final feature of the night would be for the legend car division. We would see three wide
action midpack at the start of the event. During this we would see Jeremy Hahn and Jimmy
Eicher spin in turn one. This would bring out the caution flag, resulting in a restart. Justin
Cunningham would lead lap one over Stephen Wurtzer and Tyler Rampmeyer. As the field
completed lap two, Shaun Abney would challenge and take the third position from Rampmeyer.
The trio would begin a high speed chase around the speedway. This would stall on lap ten as
Matt Grebe would spin in turn two and bring out the caution. Abney would get a great restart
and move ahead of Wurtzer for the second position. Just as he started to set his sights on the
leader, the field would once again slow on lap twelve for a spinning Ezra Burdette in turn two.
Wurtzer would take the second position back from Abney on the restart. They would now once
again begin to chase Cunningham around the speedway. Matt Grebe would once again spin in
turn two on lap fifteen and bring out the final caution of the event. On the final restart Abney
would swap positions once again with Wurtzer and slide back into the second position. Justin
Cunningham would go on to lead every lap in the twenty lap main event. Shaun Abney and
Stephen Wurtzer would round out the top three.
A big thank you to all of the fans and teams who came out to support this weekend's events. We
want to thank Ernie & Connie Davis along with RBS Truck Collision, RBS Trailer & Used Car
Sales, Gunter’s Honey, Viper Risk Management, Roy Anderson, and everyone else who had a
part in sponsoring such a huge event for the UMP Modifieds. We also want to thank everyone
who donated to the “Legends of Memory Lane” finishing position bonuses. Without all of this
incredible support this event would not have been possible. We look forward to seeing everyone
back this coming Saturday night!
